Environment
Protection and Conservation:
As one of the main stays of mankind, the
environment needs to be nurtured and constantly monitored. That the
environment creates and recreates man cannot be disputed in any sense.
Therefore we as the inhabitants of the earth have a great onus upon
us to protect and conserve this environment from which we attain our
being,
Action For Humanity has a detailed structure under our environmental
protection and conservation program that is intended to correct the
wrongs that society has inflicted and continues to inflict upon the
environment. We are very confident that our outlined strategies as
indicated on the chart below will lead us into achieving our final
purpose of sustainable Environmental Resource use.
GOALS
1. To develop and improve the skills and
capacities of the peasants in a bid to achieve a better environment in
which they live and work.
2. To assist the peasants in their quest
for maximum utilization of the resources offered by their environment.
3. To illustrate and demonstrate to the
peasants the means and methods through which the resources provided by
the environment can be sustainably developed and utilized.
4. Identifying and disseminating useful
environmental material on the standards of good management of natural
resources.
The environment in
Uganda is relied upon as an employer by over 85% of the whole
population. It constitutes what may be described as a “built‑in”
social security system and provides government with the bulk of its
revenue. That the environment is vital to our well‑being is beyond
dispute but when one looks at the producer, the man on the land, and
his enterprise, one finds low income, hand tools, small acreage,
wasteful usage, poor crop varieties, low yields, unproductive
livestock and family living conditions which even by the simplest
standards leave much to be desired.
Although the
government has done a lot in making the environment a key issue in
most of its development initiatives, a lot still remains to be
accomplished. It has been a consistent observation across space and
time that the ideas of environmental protection and conservation have
not trickled down well to the rural poor. There is gross abuse of the
environment among the rural folk‑not because it is a deliberate agenda
but because these poor people do not know the implications of their
actions
As a consequence of
the above scenario, the environment has been affected to a great
extent. The poor agricultural systems and tools used have led to
increased soil degradation, pollution of the natural drainage systems,
deforestation and a lot of other detrimental effects. Unless
a sound program is initiated either by government or
non governmental organizations and institutions, these environmental
concerns are likely to run out of control until they reach such a
point as to be declared a national or regional emergency.
AFH in its work
plan, intends to infiltrate the villages or the rural areas and attack
the cause of this environmental degradation from its cause. This is
because it is much better to treat and do away with the cause than to
treat an effect. We therefore intend to make clear to those employed
by the environment (especially agriculturalists) the importance of a
healthy environment to the Country’s economic development.
AFH will engage its
staff in developing knowledge and stimulating the application of
Environmental protection and conservation methods through such
activities as demonstration and extension services. In this way AFH
will sell the techniques of environmental improvement and enhancement
of the rural Communities by use of a community based approach.
