COMPLETED PROJECTS:

a) Schools Environment Project

This is a program that was formulated targeting the youth in schools right from primary school to senior secondary level.

In this program, AFH established seed beds from which seedlings were obtained and supplied to schools. The purpose of supplying the seedlings was to replace the trees which had been cut down during construction of the schools and for the production of fuel wood.

Through this program, we involved students in the sensitization of the surrounding communities about environmental protection and conservation. We have also been able to establish fourteen school environment clubs.

The above three pictures shows sections of Lubigi stream that are under serious pollution due to dumping of bio-degradable and non bio-degradable material in the stream.

b) Domestic Waste Disposal Project

In this project, with the help of our volunteers we undertook a door-to-door campaign method to sensitize the communities about sustainable methods of waste disposal.

A lot of emphasis was laid on proper means of disposing kitchen refuse. This is because kitchen refuse forms the biggest bulk of waste generated in and around Kampala City.

We also sensitized communities about the use of VIPs (Ventilated Improved Pit latrines) as a
proper method of disposing human excreta. This drastically reduced on the habit of excreting in polyethylene bags and then dumping them in the near by bushes and fresh water streams.

With the help of resources mobilized from ourselves, friends and efforts from volunteers. We managed to construct one VIP to serve several houses in a slum that was most hit by a lack of waste disposal facilities.

Pit latrines like this one built just along  the stream are responsible for excessive water pollution. When rain falls, a pipe connecting the toilet to the stream is unblocked releasing all human waste material in the toilet into the stream. This is a common practice by all residents of thin river valley. AFH is carrying out a sensitization campaign against this practice by teaching the residents about the need for good toilet facilities and the consequences of the present poor pit latrines.

c) Water is Life Project
With the help of the local councils, friends and volunteers, we have been able to provide clean and safe water to several homes and families. Initially, these families used to get water from streams and ponds which often got contaminated with human waste material especially during the rainy season. This could often result into a number of water related diseases such as cholera, bilharzia, typhord etc hence a leading to many deaths.

These two spring wells were built and protected by AFH to provide residents within Lubigi River Valley with access to clean and safe water.

To reduce on the above problem, we have been able to construct two protected springs.
AFH has also been able to drain, straighten and deepen a major channel. The sides of this channel have been lined with concrete and huge stones to prevent the erosion of the channel banks/slopes. We have installed several stoppers (criss-crossing metal bars) across the built channel width to help in trapping garbage that is dumped in the stream. This makes it easy for our volunteers to scoop this garbage out of the channel.

P art of a stream within Lubigi River Valley which was constructed by AFH to reduce river bank erosion during the rainy season. It was also intended to increase the rate of stream flow in order to prevent the breeding of the female anopheles mosquito which causes malaria.

Part of Lubigi Stream that is regularly cleaned by AFH. The residents of this area are beginning to appreciate the importance of a clean water stream.
